UCSF Police Department K9 Outreach Program

The UCSF Police Department proudly presents its K9 Outreach Program, promoting community well-being and positive connections across campus. Our trained outreach dog offers comfort and emotional support to students, faculty, staff, and first responders, reinforcing UCSF’s dedication to mental health and public safety.

Supporting the UCSF Community

Outreach dogs help reduce stress and anxiety by promoting a sense of calm. Whether at campus events, hospital visits, or daily walks, they strengthen community trust and engagement.

A key focus is UCSF's children's hospitals and trauma centers, where these dogs comfort young patients, families, and healthcare workers. Their presence eases anxiety, boosts morale, and creates a more supportive healing environment.

Training and Preparation

UCSF's outreach dogs undergo specialized training to ensure they are well-prepared for their healthcare and academic roles. Each dog is carefully selected based on temperament, behavior, and adaptability to various environments.

Training focuses on:

Socialization and Behavior – Dogs are introduced to different settings, including hospitals, classrooms, and busy public spaces, to ensure they remain calm and friendly.

Obedience Commands – They learn essential commands like sitting, staying, and walking on a loose leash to maintain proper behavior during interactions.

Emotional Support Skills – Specialized training helps them provide comfort to individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or trauma.

Handler Bonding – Officers and their dogs build strong connections through daily practice, play, and positive reinforcement.

Certification and Ongoing Development – Handlers must meet established training standards, and dogs undergo regular evaluations to maintain their readiness for outreach work.

A Growing Moment in Public Safety

As police outreach dogs gain recognition for their role in mental health support, UCSF joins other UC campuses (UC Davis & UC San Diego) in embracing this compassionate approach. Whether at a hospital bedside, a campus event, or a quiet moment with a first responder, UCSF's K9 Outreach Program is making a difference—one paw at a time.
