Fingerprinting and criminal history checks
UCSF policy requires that people who work in critical positions undergo a criminal history check. WeID provides LiveScan fingerprinting for this purpose. Fingerprinting service is also available to help UCSF affiliated personnel obtain professional licenses.
Unsure if you need to be fingerprinted for your UCSF position?
- The job announcement typically includes guidelines for pre-employment fingerprinting.
- Still have questions? Check with your hiring manager or consult the UCSF policy on Critical Position Background Checks.
Fingerprinting
- Your department representative must first complete and sign the required Request for Sensitive Employee Fingerprinting form (for UCSF campus employees)
- If you need your fingerprints for professional licensing purposes complete the appropriate licensing card, obtained from your school.
- Make an appointment.
- Appointments are required for fingerprinting services.
- Fingerprinting generally takes about 30 minutes.
- Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, anyone wishing to make a fingerprint appointment must first speak with a WeID team member by phone.

What to bring to your fingerprint appointment
Arrive on time with the following:
- Completed/signed Request for Sensitive Employee Fingerprinting form or professional licensing card
- A valid government photo identification
Note: UCSF will absorb the LiveScan fingerprinting fee for a UCSF employee or affiliate in a "sensitive" position.
Once your fingerprints are taken, they are securely transferred to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI to do a criminal record search.
Results are usually received and forwarded to the UCSF hiring manager or Human Resources department within three to five business days. However, time to receipt may be delayed for reasons that WeID cannot control.
Getting fingerprinted for a professional license
California license
Bring a completed Request for LiveScan Service Applicant Submission Form to your appointment.
The particular licensing agency provides the form, which must be completed with the appropriate California professional board code.
- The fee for LiveScan can vary depending on whether you have paid the licensing bureau fees. UCSF will charge a rolling fee of $38.00 on top of the licensing bureau fee.
- WeID accepts cash, checks made payable to “UC Regents,” recharge payments and Visa and Mastercard.
- The DOJ and FBI responses will be sent directly to the licensing agency.
License for another state (not California)
Bring the required documentation and fingerprint cards (if required) for each state for which you are requesting licensing.
- Note: WeID charges $38 per fingerprint card.
- Once your fingerprints are taken, you must follow the submission directions from the requesting licensing agency.
- WeID cannot submit out-of-state licensing requests to the DOJ or the FBI.
